Carlisle Gardens is an unincorporated hamlet in the town of Lockport in Niagara County, New York, USA.[1]
The quiet, dignified charm of upper-middle class England endures here in Lockport. Mostly as it has for over 90 years, now. This upscale housing development in the town on the city's east border was advanced between the World Wars. At the time, use of underground street wiring and a grassy median on most of the curving streets were innovative residential designs. Indeed, "The Gardens" were designed and built long before residential "housing developments" grew the unfavorable image they have today.
The various street names, and the development itself (Carlisle) are taken from popular English names of the time. This community, with its colonial street lighting, remains one of Lockport's most desirable areas to live in.
You can even drive on "the left side of the road" here and get away with it (to a point). "Class" is much more than income or social rank and Carlisle Gardens makes that point.[2]
Carlisle Gardens is primarily a residential neighborhood of detached, single family homes built in the 1920s. Typical neighborhood home is about 3 bedrooms, 1-1/2 baths approximately 1,500 sq. ft. Median age ca. 1925.
Entry into the neighborhoods is from Chestnut Ridge Road or Davison Road onto Windermere Road. [3]
